What exactly does the Doerr Institute do?
The Doerr Institute for New Leaders helps Rice students become more capable, confident, and ethical leaders—no matter their background or starting point. We offer evidence-based programs, one-on-one leadership coaching, and experiential workshops designed to help you grow personally and professionally during your time at Rice.
Who can participate in Doerr programs?
All Rice students—undergraduate and graduate—are welcome! You don’t need a specific major, leadership title, or previous experience to join. Our programs are open to anyone who wants to develop their leadership skills and make a greater impact on campus and beyond.
Do I need to already be in a leadership position to join?
Not at all. Our programs are designed for students at every stage of their leadership journey. Whether you’re leading a team, starting a new organization, or just beginning to explore your potential, you’ll find tools and support to help you grow.
What kind of time commitment do programs require?
We know Rice students are busy, so our programs are built to fit into your schedule. Catalyst Workshops meet only two times during the semester for two hours each, while one-on-one coaching typically includes four sessions throughout the semester. Each program is designed to be high-impact and manageable alongside your coursework and other commitments.
What’s the difference between the Catalyst, Activation, and Synthesis programs?
- Catalyst are workshops that focus on a single leadership skill.
- Activation is one-on-one coaching with a certified leadership coach.
- Synthesis is group coaching. Share your challenges with your peers, alongside a leadership coach.
What is leadership coaching, and how does it work?
Leadership coaching is a personalized, one-on-one experience with a certified professional coach. Your coach gives you an emotional intelligence assessment that helps you set your development goals. Then you review your progress throughout the semester and reflect on challenges. It’s a supportive and empowering space—students often describe it as one of the most impactful parts of their Rice experience.
How can participating in Doerr programs help me in my career?
Doerr programs strengthen the skills employers value most—communication, collaboration, self-awareness, and the ability to lead others. You’ll learn how to set meaningful goals, give and receive feedback, and make thoughtful decisions—skills that prepare you to lead in any profession or organization.
Do Doerr programs count for credit or appear on my transcript?
Doerr programs don’t count toward academic credit, however Rice students highlight their Doerr experience on résumés and graduate school applications as evidence of their leadership growth.
Is there a cost to participate?
All Doerr programs are completely free for Rice students. Our work is made possible by the generosity of the Ann and John Doerr Foundation, which ensures every student has access to high-quality leader development opportunities.
